Disney, in my opinion, is the worst at this.Finding Nemo, although a great movie, should not be considered a classic. Classic infers that it has stood the test of time, that it is good enough to go up against all that comes after it. I'm not bashing Finding Nemo, nor am I saying that the animation, voices and story will stay at the top of the mountain. I'm saying that it's too early to dub it a classic.
So what is a classic?

1. Judged over a period of time to be of the highest quality and outstanding of it's kind.
noun.
1. A work of art of recognized and established value.
2. A thing that is memorable and a very good example of it's kind.
Classical music is usually defined as a piece composed anywhere from Early Medieval to the Romantic period written by someone who is now dead. Music, as always, seems to steal words for their many genres, so classical music would and often does include pieces from modern day composers who, despite what the tabloids may say, are alive and well. Likewise, while we're talking about music, I'd agree that Purple Haze is a classic.
Classic literature I think should be defined as something that was written at least 4 generations before. So that there is no chance that the author could be alive, and it's a slim chance that the person reading it was alive at the same time. The work in question, be it music, art, movies, literature, reflects the period in which it was created. If the time period is far back enough to be remembered only by what is documented (i.e. history books), then yes, the work created in said time period would have a fair chance at being dubbed a classic. That is, if it can hold it's own with the Finding Nemos of the world.
